Ashtanga
yoga is an active, dynamic form of yoga that flows from one posture to
the next. The core Ashtanga practice consists of six progressively
more difficult series. The Primary Series is called Yoga Chikitsa,
which translates as Yoga Therapy. Its purpose is to heal and cleanse
the body and it provides the foundation for the following five series.
Regular practice of this powerful system will
help the body to become lighter, stronger and more flexible. Ashtanga
yoga is a highly disciplined exhilarating practice that tones and
defines the body shape, realigns the skeletal structure and removes
toxins through purification of the body.
The
Primary Series asana (postures), performed in a sequential order are
interspersed with “vinyasa” jump-throughs that help to maintain intense
body heat and encourage sweat. These are combined with deep clavicular
“ujjayi” breathing, body locks known as “bandhas” and gaze points
(“drishti”). The union of asana, vinyasa, breathing, bandha and
drishti internalise the practice, making it a powerful meditation
through movement.
